IRRIGATION SYSTEM: Karaikal region lies in the fag end of Cauvery Delta. Main source of irrigation is river water by Canal system. Other sources are deep bore wells and filter points. Tail-end regulator dams are also constructed in the rivers.
CROPS: In addition to paddy crop, pulses, cotton, groundnut, Gingelly, banana and vegtables are also encouraged.
OTHER INFRASTRUCTURE: The PAndit JAwaharlal Nehru College Of Agriculture and Research Institute (PAJANCOA & RI) was started in 1987 which imparts B.Sc (Agri.) along with research and field works.In the year 1960, the first seed farm of Union Terrority of Pondicherry was established at Madhur with the main aim of producing improved good quality seeds. In 1967, the Vocational, Agricultural School was started, adjacent to the State seed Farm, Madhur. KRISHI VIGYAN KEDRA also set up at STATE SEED FORM, Madur and functioning.
ADMINISTRATION: Agriculture Department in Karaikal is functioning under the head of one Additional Director of Agriculture.
History : The French Govt. by decree dated 27-09-1888 created a Chamber of Agriculture in Karaikal headed by the Administrator. The chamber with five members were purely consultative. "The Syndical Agricoles" concept made local Associations of Agriculturists responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of monitor irrigation in the communes. The Agriculture Department in Karaikal was first established in 1955 with Thiru Anantharaman, Agricultural Officer as head, with a skeletal staff in the cadre of demonstration maistries, all deputed from Tamil Nadu.
