HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

        The French Govt. by decree dated 27-09-1888 created a Chamber of Agriculture in Karaikal headed by the Administrator. The chamber with five members were purely consultative. "The Syndical Agricoles" concept made local Associations of Agriculturists responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of monitor irrigation in the communes.

        The Agriculture Department in Karaikal was first established in 1955 with Thiru Anantharaman, Agricultural Officer as head, with a skeletal staff in the cadre of demonstration maistries, all deputed from Tamil Nadu. In the year  1960, the first seed farm of Union Terrority of Pondicherry was established at Madhur with the main aim of producing improved good quality seeds. In 1967, the Vocational, Agricultural School was started, adjacent to the State seed Farm, Madhur. The Agricultural College(PAJANCOA) was started in 1987 which imparts B.Sc (Agri.) to 60 students every year along with research  and field works.

FUNCTIONS / OBJECTIVES

  *  To increase the per unit production of principal field crops by advocating low cost   high-efficiency technology.

    *  To make available all the critical inputs at the right time to the farmers.

    *  To extend Agro Service infrastructural facilities for soil and plant care.

    *  To train farmers the modern agricultural technology in order to produce
        low-cost high-yielding varieties of corps.
