LABOUR
HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
Implementation of the various labour laws was brought into force in the Union Terrtory of Pondicherry during October 1963. The department was functioning as Inspector de Travail along with the G.A.B at Pondicherry.
Conseaquent on the introduction of the various labour enactments, the post of inspector de Travail was redesignated as Commissioner along with Assistant Inspector of Labour. The Office of the Assistant Inspector of Labour was upgraded to that office of the Labour Officer during 1980.
During 1980 a Sub-Employment Exchange was set up in Karaikal, attached to the Labour Office.
A Rural Labour Welfare Centre at Karaikal was started in 1965 and another at Nedungadu in February 1981.

FUNCTIONS / OBJECTIVES
Conducting Inspection of Shops and Establishments, Theatres, Catering establishments etc.
under Payment of Wages Act.
Issuing License to various contractors for each nature of works under Contract Labour Act.
Registration and renewal
of employment cards.
Sponsering candidates as per the required norms.
Imparting training to women folk of industrial labourers' families in needle work and handicraft works.
