WOMEN AND CHILD DEVELOPMENT
HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Women and Child Development, Karaikal was bifurcated from the Social Welfare Department during the year 1996-97. Tmt. K.Pankajam was the first Child Development Project Officer in Karaikal after bifurcation. 40 Balwadies and 140 Anganwadies are functioning in this region. The activities of this department has been divided into 3 categories viz. Welfare of Women and Children, Welfare of Women and Welfare of Aged Persons.

FUNCTIONS /
OBJECTIVES
40 Balwadies are being run by this department, which takes care of the pre-school
education of children in the age group of 3-6 years and provides mid-day meals to them.
140 Anganwadi centres are being run, which provides supplementary food to
infants,pre-school children, pregnant and lactating women. Also pre-school education is
given to children in the age group 3-6 years.
To create awareness among women about their rights and privileges Women's Day and Women's
Week Celebrations are being conducted every year on 9th November and 8th March
respectively.
Children's Day Celebrations, Well Baby Show, Quiz Competitions and Social Service Camps
are conducted for children and prizes are given under other programmes for Welfare of
Children.
Financial assistance is given to windows for their re-marriage and for daughters marriage.
Educational allowance is given to windows' children.
An Hostel for Working Women is functioning from 1991 onwards. It provides accomodation to
25 working women who come from other regions.
Monthly pension is given to windows and old persons above 60 years of age and who are below the poverty line.
