ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION :

•   It is a fact that NIC-Karaikal provides with a solid foundation in a software development and maintenance process. The various departments are constantly in the pursuit of developing application software and are customized to the users needs. These Application Software Products are completely indigenous and user friendly and we intended to bring the benefits of computerization to the Govt. door steps.  

•   Initially, all the application packages were developed under SCO foxbase+ with Unixware platform. SCO products like lyrix and professional are also being used by the departments for documentation and Spreadsheets respectively. A Unixware database server also connected on a LAN through a LAN Terminal Server.  

•   In spite of blossoming of Windows platform/Internet, the above said trend is being changed and this office is bound to develop the software products on GUI based. Hence Windows-2000 server with clients on LAN are also set up to meet the requirements of software products which are developed by applying modern programming practices.  

COMMUNICATION SUPPORT :

•   In order to improve the communication support to the District Administration, NIC-Karaikal acts as an Internet Service Provider. A separate Linux system is set up and is configured on a LAN. It acts as a proxy server with the internet gateway of SkyBlaster 360 E VSAT via KU Band.

•   The Government organizations placed around the Collector’s office come under Ethernet LAN and the internet service is open to them freely. Remote users (Govt. departments) are also availing this facility through dial-up.

•   In order to enable the Remote Access Service (RAS), a Network Access Server named as JET Stream is also connected to the LAN and necessary ports are configured to provide a PPP services on available 16 asynchronous ports. At present two lines are dedicated to enable this service by connecting modems.

•   Email Accounts for UT Govt. Departments are created in our own mail server (mail.nic.in), maintained by our Head Quarters, Delhi.

•   Mailing software is configured to our mail server.

•   Modem Installation, dial-up settings are carried out in the user's machines.

•   During the time of Cyclones, Flood, Tsunami, Elections (both polling and counting), SSLC & H.Sc. results etc., this office is rendering service to carry out the administrative works easily and smoothly.

•   Install a separate system to the observer, counting centers, Media peoples and enable the Network access to them.

•   Elections results were disseminated to the public. Exam results, Counseling dates were disseminated to the pupils

•   Transmissions of file, message to their parent departments as and when necessary.

•   Co-ordinate with the REVENUE department during the Internet Auctions.

TECHNICAL CO-ORDINATION :

•   Required system configurations are recommended to the user departments based on their needs observed.  

•   Site preparations, verification works are being carried out to install the new computer system to the user's department.  

•   Loading of Operating System, Application Software to the user's machines upon their request.  

•   Implemented Unix based software products are make portability and copied to the user's computer system.  

•   Selecting pupils from DIC as Trainees and use them for voluminous data entry work like Land Records, Ration Cards, documentation etc.,  

•   Conducting NDCC meeting and pursue the user's needs. It helps to increase the software products and improve the software quality.  

TRAINING :

•   Provides necessary training to the dealing clerk on their software product developed by this office.  

•   Users are given the training on various mailing software, so that they can enable to exchange mails.
