HISTORY

ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION :

NIC is a premier organisation in the field of Information Technology (IT) in India.It was set up in March 1975 by the Government of India to play a promotional role in creating Computer Awareness and for developing & implementing computer based Information System for decision support in the Government machineries.
 

NIC SET UP :

NIC has set up satellite based nation-wide computer Communication network called NICNET with over 850 nodes located throughout the country. Using NICNET, internet facility is availed by the users from the block level. NIC district units are also provides developing and implementing Computer Based Information (Informatics) System to the respective Government departments. Our own district KARAIKAL is one of the node of NICNET.
 

ABOUT THE DISTRICT(KARAIKAL) :

KARAIKAL comes under one of the region of Pondicherry Union Territory (UT) and is surrounded by the Nagapattinam District of Tamil Nadu. It is 161 Sq. Kms. In area and has population strength of 1,70,640 according to 2001 Census. Karaikal region is irrigated by the canal system. The main source of irrigation is river water to be released from Mettur reservoir. It comprises of 5 Communes and one Municipality in which about 37 Revenue Villages. It  has 6 Assembly Constituencies.  Regional Administrator is the head of this region.
 

NIC AT KARAIKAL :

NIC Karaikal Unit has been operational, since October, 1988. It was started with Micro Earth Station(MES) / VSAT connected to the AT386 chip based computer system with 8 MB RAM & 300 MB Hard Disc storage. Initially it was working under the platform of SCO XENIX with SCO Application products like foxbase+, lyrix and professional. Thiru A.Chandrasekaran and Thiru V.Arunachalam Who were appointed as District Informatics Officer and District Informatics Associate during this tenure.

NIC Systems and VSATS are upgraded periodically as and when necessary, under the UNIX platform. After blossoming of Windows, existing applications are being transported as GUI based ie. VB with MS SQL server.

NIC Karaikal designing, developing and implementing various areas and providing computer based information system to the Govt. departments. Impart training to the working level staff on the use of the software developed for their unique requirement. With the help of available VSATs, internet facility is being provided to the user departments.

Currently  Thiru.N.S. Ravichandran and Thiru.P.Elangovan are working as DIO and DIA respectively.

 

NIC DISTRIST CO-ORDINATION COMITTEE (NDCC) :

According to the G.O.Ms.No. 122/88/F.5/EDP dated 26th of October, 1988, The Government of Pondicherry decided to constitute a NIC District Co-ordination Committee (NDCC) in respect of the Karaikal region.

The Committee will consist of the following members:-
